Lugu
Kõrgel linna kohal seisab kuldne kuju – Õnnelik Prints. Ta näeb kõike, mis tema all toimub, kuid ei saa ise liikuda. Ühel õhtul peatub tema jalamil väike pääsuke, kes on teel soojale maale.
Nende kohtumisest sünnib lugu sõprusest, armastusest ja ohverdusest. Oscar Wilde kirjutas selle muinasjutu 1888. aastal. See on lugu sellest, mida oleme valmis andma kellegi teise heaks ja sellest, mis jääb alles siis, kui oleme ära andnud kõik, mis meil on.
Etendus toimub vabaõhu-kontsertlavastusena ajaloolise viinaköögi ja jõeäärse õueala keskel. Vanad kiviseinad, puud ja augustiõhtu saavad osaks lavastusest ning loovad sellele erilise atmosfääri.
Helilooja saatesõna
Wilde kirjutas „Õnneliku Printsi“ 1888. aastal. See on üsna lihtne lugu kahest tegelasest, kes kohtuvad ja hakkavad üksteise pärast tegema asju, mida nad alguses ilmselt teha ei plaaninud.
Kui hakkasin sellele muusikat kirjutama, jäi mind kõige rohkem huvitama Prints ise. Ta näeb kõike, mis linnas toimub, aga ei saa ise mitte kuhugi minna. Pääsuke saab. Ta võiks lihtsalt edasi lennata, nagu pääsukesed sügisel ikka teevad. Aga mingil põhjusel ta ei lähe.
Mida rohkem ma selle looga tegelesin, seda rohkem hakkasid need kaks tegelast mulle huvi pakkuma. Üks ei saa liikuda, kuigi see võiks tema elu muuta. Teine saab liikuda, aga otsustab mitte minna.
Võib-olla ongi selles loos midagi väga lihtsat. Mõnikord piisab sellest, et sa lihtsalt jääd, et saaks sündida midagi ilusat.
Libretisti sõna
Kui hea sõber helistab ja ütleb, et kirjutab ooperit ning küsib, kas ma oleksin valmis sellele teksti kirjutama, siis ega sellisele pakkumisele väga „ei“ öelda ei saa. Eriti kui tegemist on looga, mida oled ise lapsena lugenud ja mis on meelde jäänud.

The Story
High above the city stands a golden statue — the Happy Prince. He sees everything that happens below him, but cannot move. One evening a small swallow, on her way to warmer lands, stops at his feet.
From their meeting comes a story of friendship, love and sacrifice. Oscar Wilde wrote this tale in 1888. It is a story about what we are willing to give for someone else, and about what remains when we have given away everything we have.
The performance is staged outdoors, as a concert production in the grounds of a historic distillery by the river. Old stone walls, trees and the August evening become part of the staging and give it its atmosphere.
A Word from the Composer
Wilde wrote “The Happy Prince” in 1888. It is a fairly simple story about two characters who meet and begin doing things for one another that they probably had not planned to do.
When I started writing the music, it was the Prince himself who interested me most. He sees everything that happens in the city, but he cannot go anywhere. The swallow can. She could simply fly on, as swallows do in autumn. But for some reason she stays.
The longer I worked on the story, the more these two characters drew me in. One cannot move, even though moving could change his life. The other can move, but chooses not to.
Perhaps there is something very simple in this story. Sometimes it is enough just to stay, so that something beautiful can happen.
A Word from the Librettist
When a good friend calls to say he is writing an opera and asks whether you would write the words for it, you cannot really say no. Especially when it is a story you read yourself as a child and never forgot.
